No more baby-sitting but self-motivation and self-discipline
We no longer have teachers telling and reminding us what we need to do, to go see the advisor, or complete important paperwork. College was definitely a big wake up call for me and I had to learn how to take responsibility for my own education fast.—Juanita Torres, Feb 5, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
In college that has to change because many fall behind. In college your teacher is not going to be after you for an assignment you didn't turn in, you just get a zero. The home visitor is not going to go to you r house if you don't attend class, the professor just drops you from the class. In other word they don't baby you in college like they do in high school. Students need to be determined, focused, and disciplined to make it out of college with a degree.—Grace, Feb 6, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
If compared to college students, we learn more then high school students because we are working hard to obtain a degree. We place more effort in learning, obtaining good grades and having a high GPA. Our learning process is very different from there’s, we do not have a teacher who cares if we learning or not. We must learn by our selves the majority of the time because what we learn we must apply it in our careers—Kassi, Feb 11, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Think about the future, motivated to achieve
I do believe that high school vs. college students learn differently because of their age. The student's goals are different because college students have to study harder to accomplish their diploma. However, the diploma for college students are more important because you want to have the best job to support your family.—Lily, Feb 10, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
I strive to do my very best in my classes because I'm paying for them and I want to succeed as a Historian after graduation. I now make more of an effort to be a well-rounded student and individual in general. –Juanita Torres, Feb 5, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
…now I strive for knowledge and I am more excited to learn new materials. I know that education is the key to a brighter and bigger future and without it life will be a struggle. I admit I took my free education for granted and now I wish I wouldn’t, and I feel foolish that I did.—Ally, Feb 6, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Now that I am in college I take things more serious. I try to pay more attention to what the professor is saying any little thing she or he says can be a big part for a test. My GPA to me is well. I try my best in class, not like in high school.—Ice, Feb 10, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
…most of us begin to care again because we want to go on and have careers so that bring us to college where we begin our studies on what interests us the most. It is during this time that we again begin to be like sponges, because we want to learn what we need for out future so that we can succeed in life.—Ry*, Feb 12, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
College students do not necessarily have a desire for knowledge but do so to acquire a degree in a high paying field.—Homer, Feb 13, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Better cognitive ability
Now I am on my third round of college and drawing creative conclusions comes with ease. I think it is because my realm of information has grown. Programs on National Public Radio, the news, collected facts and most important, my strong opinions all help to create this sense of comprehensiveness. We age like fine wine, it only gets better with time!!—Anna, Feb 8, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
…as a person decides to return to college in an adult stage, they are more aware of what college means. They have one priority and that is to pass for a better life. They tend to be more attentive to lectures, take more notes, read more, and tend to analyze every point that is mentioned. They are more logical thinkers that in a way are competitive peer wise and want to adapt to the different learning styles that the teacher is teaching.— Melody Barrera, Feb 10, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
More responsible learning
…when they go to college, they are more focused because now they are studying for their career. Also some pay out of their own pocket so it would be a waste of time and money if they were failing. Some get financial aid so if they can't afford to pay for them self and need the assistance of the government to pay for their education then it is absolutely necessary for them to do good if they want to continue in school.—Mina, Feb 6, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Since returning to school I have to pay for my classes, so I feel pressured to have good grades. I feel that as you get older, you realize that no one else is going to be responsible for your mistakes. Ultimately it makes you mature and take more responsibility in your learning styles and abilities.—Nina, Feb 9, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
I belief that the difference in learning between a high school student and a college student is the awareness of responsibility based on age. The sense of responsibility and the desire to obtain a better life or a better economic status influence the college student to be responsible in regards to his studies.—Patrick, Feb 11, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Exceptions: Some un-woken up college students
… but I have also know some college students that have not truly cared one way or another what they do in college. Thus their grades decline to dangerous levels. Because of this, I don't go so far as to assume that all students in college will be studious enough to realize what they are aiming for.—Joshua Price Feb 7, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
