Some students believe that parents also play an important part in the high school students “low motivation, high dropping out” problem. Parents influence high school students’ motivation in a negative way if 1) they do not care for their children’s learning, 2) they do not provide encouragement for them, and 3) they do not get involved with school activities nor partnership with teachers.
Many parents treat schools as day cares. They drop their kids off at school and get rid of them for at least a couple of hours. Parents do not encourage their kids as much as they did before, they do not monitor their kids activities in and out of school. Trust me if many parents had to pay a private school they would be more involved in their kids education to see that they are getting their money's worth.—Homer, Feb 1, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Reason two might be that the students don’t have the support and encouragement they need from their family. The students’ parents might not believe in higher education and just want their child to get a job and help pay with the bills. The students might then feels obligated and see no point to obtain a higher education.—Ally, Jan 30, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
First of all, I think that students are not motivated because both parents are working too much and do not have time to encourage and support their children.—Red, Jan 30, 2008, EDCI 4322-01
Many parents are so busy working that they don't realize that their child has been missing school for a week. I am not placing all the blame on the parents but I do think that if teachers and parents work together, they can help more students to succeed.—Nina, Feb 1, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
I believe it stems from home. I believe the students are not motivated or given encouragement from their parents to succeed. If a child is not given the right encouragement from the parents what will push them to succeed? They need the push so they can strive to be and do their best. If they feel the parents don’t care, their attitude will be why should I care? They need to know that it matters to their parents whether they pass or fail.—Shirley, Jan 28, 2008, EDCI 4322-01
Middle and high school students not being motivated this starts at home. Parents don't have much time to spends with there kids and talk to them about school. Parents are to busy working trying to put food in the table. Nowadays parents have two jobs and don’t have time to talk to their children about school. If parents had a bit of more time I think it could make a difference.—Ice, Feb 1, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
