Unrealistic
It is amazing that the people who designed the tests expect all students to be at the same level because that seems to be impossible. Every individual learns differently, have different abilities and these types of tests do not measure student’s capacities.—Emily Fierros February 10 2008, EDCI 6304
Non-productive
I have spoken to one of my friends teaching Pre-Calculus and she feels that the mathematics section of the exit level test only tests minimal skills such as graphs and charts. She has had several of her top students fail this test because it does not test higher level skills that she is currently covering. She believes that the reason of her students failing is that they have not studied this material lately.—Emily Fierros, February 10, 2008, EDCI 6304
Unreliable
So many factors come into play especially for a test that is taken on one day. Weather, how well the student rested the night before. Did the student have a good breakfast? No breakfast? Were his/her parents supportive that morning? Did the parents even know about the test? Was the classroom to warm-cold? So many factors......but they only have one day!--Nora Lamas, February 12, 2008, EDCI 6304
A mistake
So far I think all of my classmates have hit the nail on the head. However, I also think that TAKS testing is a bunch of bureaucratic mambo jumbo and perhaps someone is filling their pocket with all the money that is involved in testing. To add to this is the injustice we are putting our students because of all the drill and kill we put them through.—East, Feb 6, 2008, EDCI 6304
…it (the high stake test) is controlled by politicians. These politicians have never been in the education field. It is a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Our school systems spend so much money getting our students ready to "pass" their tests by giving after school tutoring, Saturday Academies ( trying to make it sound so special), and not to mention the tons of paper used for skill and drill. This money could be used for better things. –Hannah, February 7, 2008, EDCI 6304
Personally, I believe that the entire educational system is hindered by the pressure that comes from showing progress through one assessment. I believe that the government is finally coming to its senses as it realizes that The TAKS is a mistake.—Ray, Feb 8, 2008, EDCI 6304
