Developing good studying habits
As I started re-reading chapter 1, I began to make use of reading strategies such as highlighting key points, writing notes on the side, using the questions at the end of the chapter to ensure that I have understood the text. Another strategy that I had to use was re-reading the portions that I could not understand such as Thorndike’s connectionist theory or Guthrie’s contiguity theory.—Wai King, Hung, Jan 23, 2008, EDCI 6304
Memorizing strategies
We were given five minutes and I got 17 out of 25 words, which I thought was pretty good because I basically thought my memory was shot. I also painted an image in my head of the words, and gave them tangible life in my head.—Mina, Jan 31, 2008, EDCI 4322-01
I enjoyed the exercise on seeing how many words we could remember. At first I thought, Hmm should I categorize them or should I just try to remember them. I tried to remember them. Even though I did not write them down in categories, I tried to remember them in my head in categories; which got me ...I think it was only 17 words. It was an interesting exercise.—Red, Jan 30, 2008, EDCI 4322-01
Having a study plan/schedule
Now about the mid-term...I think the best way to study for it and do well is to be organized. Make a list of all the things you need to review including work you have for other classes (because I have a lot of work to do besides the work for this class). I also think that it is important to make a schedule. Don't try to do too much in one day because it'll be too overwhelming. You need to make sure you get your work done everyday, otherwise you'll get backed up. I think we need to be very strict with ourselves and do as much work as we can now so that we can enjoy our spring break week at least for two days.—May, Mar 4, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Self-motivating
I have been doing a lot of self motivated and individualized learning in my American History Senior Seminar. If I do not follow through with my established learning strategy, I do not perform very well on the two fifty question tests and essay I take every Tuesday morning in only about an hour. I have been keeping a sort of study experience journal to monitor my methods and attention put into my studies. I know that people were laughing about studying on a Friday or Saturday night, but I do it often. I still do not have traditional electricity so all of the time that I used to spend watching T.V. until late at night has been reallocated to reading by five watt flourescent light. I think that not having the instant satisfaction of many distracting appliances has actually helped my overall performance in school. Except for my tests today, I have been making wonderful connections and receiving positive feedback from all of my professors.—Anna, Mar 4, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
