Gap solution 1: Individual
Self determination
I know some of my friends who have nothing and should be in fact working to support their family, but instead come to better themselves in school because they had the support to do better in school and have a better life with their new found education. I believe it has to come from the individual himself to set aside these stereotypes and not fall into the wrong path, but try to learn and have a better lifestyle for themselves.—John Jefferson February 25, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
I think people need to have confidence in themselves before they can do well. —Eldon Clark, February 20, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
Assimilation to American Culture
Several semesters back I had to write a paper on acculturation and assimilation of Hispanics in what is the melting pot of the United States. I learned that as we acculturate and assimilate to the norms of American society, we tend to close the gap in education between Caucasians and Hispanics students.—Homer, March 8, 2008, EDCI 4322-60
