How to be a great teacher?

How to be a great teacher?

What kind of teacher do I want to be? What type of teacher do I have the potential of being? What type of learning instruction am I going to implement in my classroom?
I believe I have the potential to be an extraordinary teacher, the people that have inspired me to go into the teaching profession have been extraordinary teachers and I can see now how their teaching philosophy was much like Social Constructivism.

I always thought of my self to agree and to believe in social constructivism but today when Dr. Boyanton introduce the Humanistic approach I found myself very fascinating by it. I was actually under the impression that the Humanistic approach would maybe shelter the student a bit too much, but after the explanation that Dr. Boyanton gave us, I was finally able to see the clear picture. Is not sheltering but providing a secure environment where the student can learn. I can see myself using the Humanistic approach with a combination of Social Constructivism.

I believe in being student-center and empower the students, giving them the ability to think for themselves and prepare them for the real world. (Yolanda Bodden, June19, 2008)

Teachers are automatically considered to have a personality that is perfect enough to be a role model. It’s something that we need to be regardless of how we want children to view us. When I began working with middle school students my first thought was to try to inspire them to do their best. After a few weeks into the school year I started to notice that my students were not only asking me for help on their homework but advice on personal issues. I went from being a teacher to a counselor and finally a role model. I had many students who heard me practicing on my music and asking me how they would be able sound like me. My response, was for them to take their instruments home and practice on their study music book for at least 30 minutes. This would help them build better techniques for future UIL concert music. The same goes for their homework, practicing doesn't make you perfect, reviewing the Right steps will always help you become a stronger, more confident person. (Lisa Marie Avalos)

I really enjoyed today’s lesson because we were talking about the 3 approaches to instruction: Behavioral, Cognitive, and Humanistic approach. As we were going through the behavioral approach I was thinking to myself that I would never want to be that kind of a teacher. I do not want my classroom to only be teacher centered. As we went on to talk about the cognitive approach when I was reading the approaches I really liked that way of teaching. I was thinking to myself that I want to be a teacher like this. I like that it was student centered, and that there was not only one correct answer. But as we went on to talk about the humanistic approach, I really liked some of the things in that approach also. I liked this approach because it was mostly about caring for the students. That is one thing that I think that will come natural for me. Once I am able to get to know my students I am definitely going to create a special bond with each and everyone of them. I think in order for someone to be a good teacher, you have to care about the students. So I think that when I become a teacher I am going to use different approaches from each of these 3 approaches.
