I would like to comment over the reading I did over Chapter 6. As I read I understand that there are different types of ways a school groups their students to better help in their way of learning. I believe most schools here in Texas are Between-Class Ability Grouping.

From my experience as a student and a teacher’s assistant in the San Benito School District, Between-Class ability grouping is the way students are grouped. I never realized that there are different kinds or that students were even grouped according to their learning ability according to standardized tests. However, it does makes sense because I remember in middle school you were either in Special Ed, Regular or G.T. (advanced) classes and in high school classes were basically the same however the advanced classes were no longer called G.T., they would now be known as Pre-A.P. Even though students were grouped according to their scores on these standardized tests they were also regrouped within the group they were already in. For example, at the end of every school year the school counselors meet with students to pick out their career pathway and if one has already been chosen to make sure it hasn’t changed. According to what the student picked they would be put in those classes that could help them achieve their goals for that career pathway.

Grouping students has come along way since the beginning of the different types of ability groups formed. Even though there are other ways students are grouped I believe between-class grouping is the one that is used widely throughout our country. While I do see the advantages and disadvantages of grouping students I understand that it is done to better help the students in their learning process.
