I believe that it is important for teachers to know different behavioral management techniques. Children are going to have behaviors and it is crucial for teachers to use the appropriate technique. It would not be right for a teacher to punish a student for something that they didn’t deserve; “the consequence should fit the crime.”
Working with children with special needs, I experience behaviors all day. With the use of positive reinforcement, the teacher and I are able to decrease the behaviors, but they are still present. In our classroom we use the token economy. For every half hour the students can earn a sticker. If they have earned at least ten stickers, they have earned their free time.
I do not believe in taking away stickers. If a student has misbehaved for one of the periods, they just do not receive a sticker. This way, it creates a responsibility for the student. The student knows that it is their responsibility to earn stickers and get free time at the end of the day.
The teacher and I also use immediate reinforcement such as verbal praise and tangible reinforcers such as food. These types of reinforcers are good because they are immediately satisfying to the students.
I also believe that reinforcement as well as punishment should be age appropriate, for example, a student who is in fifth grade should not be receiving a time-out. It important for teachers to use reinforcement throughout the day to motivate students to succeed at their tasks as well as to decrease any inappropriate behaviors.
