On Tuesday, October 21st, at 7 pm, Teachers College will host "Education and the Next President," a debate between Linda Darling-Hammond, education advisor to Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, and Lisa Graham Keegan, education advisor to Republican nominee John McCain.

The debate on education was really eye-opening. I think that, especially this election, education is not talked about enough. Every time that there is a debate, I feel that all the candidates do is accuse each other of false claims, and then spend the rest of the time defending themselves.

There were several points made that were interesting. For example, I think that it is unfortunate that the United States can't really rate our students against other nations, because our state testing is not regulated. Why not require all of the states to have similar tests, so that we can see where we are making mistakes in our education system as a whole?

All they talk about is lack of funding, which I agree is a problem, but if students are lacking the "basics" of education, then no amount of money is going to fix it.
