On Tuesday, October 21st, at 7 pm, Teachers College will host "Education and the Next President," a debate between Linda Darling-Hammond, education advisor to Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, and Lisa Graham Keegan, education advisor to Republican nominee John McCain.
I do not believe that we should evaluate teachers based directly on student achievement. There are a number of significant factors that determine how students perform in class and on exams; sometimes even the most dedicated and highly motivated teachers cannot improve the scores of these students.
Also, if we do use this type of evaluation, teachers may only teach students to prepare for an exam and do not focus on helping students to understand and learn the material completely. I believe that no matter how many courses taken or textbooks read, the only real preparation a teacher will get depends on their actual experience in the classroom. Student teaching is usually a part of the prep that teachers will undergo before starting their profession. Some suggestions would be to start the student teaching gradually and for more time.
Money will not completely solve all of the problems we have with our schools today; it can only help to bring in more resources which can be useful to enhance learning.
