On Tuesday, October 21st, at 7 pm, Teachers College will host "Education and the Next President," a debate between Linda Darling-Hammond, education advisor to Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, and Lisa Graham Keegan, education advisor to Republican nominee John McCain.

After a long week filled with a lot of work, I was very excited to hand in the mid-term and watch the debate. One of the conversations that was brought up in today’s class that I found very interesting was should teachers be awarded for their students achievement?

I disagree with the group that was supporting this argument. If someone is looking to be rewarded though money or gift cards, that makes me think they didn’t become a teacher for the right reasons. A reward for me would be watching a child’s face when he finally understands a problem, reads his first book or succeeds in his/her assignments. To me those rewards are priceless and you know that as a teacher you have done something right.

I think it would be very hard to evaluate a teacher on their student’s achievements especially if you are evaluating the teacher though the students standardized tests. Not every child may be a good test taker. On the other hand they may be doing very well in their teacher’s class.

With all the challenges schools are facing today I don’t think that blindly investing more money will help. I would like to see them take a long look at exactly where the money is being spent. It is my opinion that the money may not be applied properly. One example of this would be in the case of higher income schools vs. lower income schools.
