In today’s class, I began to realize the importance of lesson planning and the tools that need to be obtained in order to achieve a highly successful lesson. It is highly important as educator to be able to communicate to the students through effective lesson plans within the classroom setting.

In order to have and give an effective lesson, the teacher needs to set-up goals, objectives, and perform the lesson in a well-organized manner. It is important that the information being taught to the students is clearly defined, relatable, organized, and meaningful to the students. It is essential that we use time appropriately, teach in a professional manner, and provide a structured lesson. In order for the teacher to be successful, he or she has to make prerequisites in which we have to teach new information based upon prior information that was learned. We also need to provide clear explanations, point out key elements of the lesson, allow students to answer or respond to questions, and it is extremely beneficial to keep a fast, as well as flowing lesson. It is important to realize that students get highly distracted and uninterested in material if it is not quick and meaningful.

One also has to realize that students cannot comprehend new information over long periods of time. It is imperative to teach new information over short periods of time in order for them to comprehend the concepts being learned. I think it is also essential for the teacher to provide problem solving techniques, examples, illustrations, models, hands-on activities, and to find ways to get the students to actively participate, as well as be engaged within the lesson.

In this class, I have learned the importance of changing, as well as adjusting our lessons. It is imperative to not give a lesson purely based upon lecturing. I have learned tremendously the importance of using PowerPoint, debating, discussing, journal reflections, and hands-on activities in order for students to relate to the material being learned throughout this class. The most important aspect of giving an effective lesson is to use variety when teaching.

It is also beneficial to realize that not all students learn the same. Every student has his or her own capabilities, preferences, and learning styles. We have to accommodate all students and realize that sometimes we might have to adjust our presentation, curriculum, as well as lessons based upon the needs of the students in order to give them the most successful opportunities in order to increase their learning.

To emphasize, I also feel that we have to be able to check the understanding of the concepts being learned to the students. We can have an effective lesson by selecting students randomly to answer questions. It is also helpful for the students to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and be interactive with the teacher if they want to go more into depth on a topic or concept, as well as go over material they do not understand proficiently.

We must also always assess students after a lesson in order to test comprehension of the new information and concepts that were learned. We can do this through homework, assignments, tests, questioning, research, projects, individualized work, group work, or through discussion. In order to make a lesson completely successful, a teacher must monitor work, collect and grade material based upon the lesson, as well as provide positive feedback and criticism. Last, the teacher should always provide opportunities for the students to practice, review, study, and rehearse information, as well as new concepts covered throughout the lesson.

I also believe a successful lesson depends upon the approach the teacher uses. I do not believe in using one specific approach. I think it is important to try to incorporate a few different approaches in ones teaching style or when giving a lesson. I can identify most with the Cognitive and Humanistic approach to learning. I prefer the cognitive approach because it gives students the chance to think on their own, experience learning, discover concepts, and understand things from learning in their own innate way. I like the idea of scaffolding, in which we can let students figure things out on their own, but also be able to provide them with assistance.

I also think it is important to use multiple views in teaching, in which one can use discussions, debates, journals, and sharing about new concepts in order to further achieve successful learning. I also think it is imperative that they do not just learn based upon testing or reinforcement. However, giving students the opportunity to apply real life situations, observations, research, projects, and assignments outside of class gives them a chance to learn based upon their own curiosity and motivation.

I like the idea that there is not always one clear answer, but that students can critically think and provide numerous answers, as well as ideas when learning. I think it is great for a teacher to be actively engaged in students’ education, but we can also give them the chance to self-regulate his or her own learning. This is one of the reasons I would also incorporate the Humanistic approach into my teaching. I believe the humanistic approach is also essential in providing a successful lesson and will benefit students in learning at a higher level. I think it is essential that we begin to let students self-regulate and self-evaluate their own work, learning, and behaviors. We have to create work that is meaningful and relatable to every student.

The humanistic teaching approach sets-up a positive environment that allows students to be intrinsically motivated to communicate, learn, control their behavior, explore new concepts, and understand each others feelings. I think it is highly important that students be comfortable with their teacher and with their peers in order to work together as a group in order to learn in the most proficient way.

There are truly a lot of ideas and elements in order to provide students with an effective lesson. It is the responsibility of the teacher to continuously find new strategies, methods, and approaches to teach within the classroom. However, it is also important to give students the chance to be involved and to take an active role in their own learning, as well as monitor their innate behaviors.
