I thought today’s class was extremely interactive, engaging, and effective. I thought it was a great idea to let us grade our own exams, as well as have the chance to debate based upon our correct or incorrect answers.
I think it was highly effective to have the entire class involved in debating questions and our own answers. It gave each of us the opportunity to participate, as well as be active in our own learning. I discovered tonight that it is essential that teacher’s give students the chance to share their opinions and hear their feedback on assignments, tests, and homework. It is important to give assessments, but also explain to them why they could have selected a better answer, as well as give them the opportunity to rationalize their own choice. It is a great way to have students interactive and critically thinking about their own work.
Even though we were purely reviewing assessment questions, we were all actively engaging in the learning process. It is imperative that teacher’s not only give assessments, but give students the chance to critically think, analyze, discuss, and debate. It is essential that educators realize that we cannot teach based upon one style because every student learns, understands, and interprets things in his or her own specific manner. It was an effective teaching strategy because it gave us the chance to reflect upon our own answers, in which we either had to support or disagree with others in the class by engaging in learning.
After briefly discussing the concept of constructivism, I began to reflect and wonder if we all learn, as well as interpret things differently. Reviewing the questions and answers in the Mid-term clearly demonstrated an example of how everyone thinks, understands, interprets, and learns in their own unique way. As future educators, we have to be aware that all students learn in different manners, as well as possess their own learning styles and preferences within the classroom.
It is important as teachers to convey to students that they need to take an active role in their own learning. This is why it is vital that we provide them with the chance to think, interpret, and learn based upon their individualized abilities. It is beneficial to give students various assignments, tests, homework, discussions, and projects that they can all accomplish in their own way. It is extremely important for teachers to realize that when giving an assessment, we need to give students the opportunity to answer some questions that provides them a chance to understand the concepts, interpret the material, and come up with a final answer in their own manner or learning style.
Educators have to understand that many students learn, understand, and interpret information based upon their prior knowledge from family, teachers, and their environment. Many of them comprehend, answer questions, and learn based upon the world around them, experiences, beliefs, social interactions, and values.
In today’s class, I realized the importance of giving students the opportunity to construct their own knowledge and learning. It is vital that we let them understand and interpret information based upon their own individualized ways, as well as give them the freedom to explore the endless possibilities of learning. They have to be given the chance to take an active role in their own learning. It is important for teachers to realize that students should not be taught to purely recall or process information on a consistent basis, but be able to understand, interpret, discover, create, and experience concepts in their own individualized ways by actively thinking within the classroom setting.
