Killing Two Birds with One Stone: Using Exam Review to Teach Constructivism

IIn last night’s class, we reviewed our midterm examinations. In doing this, we were able to discuss our answers to our professor and with our peers. Dr. Boytanton gave us the opportunity to argue our grade for more points. IF we had a disagreement with an answer we gave along with the points granted we were able to discuss the answer and our professor would grant us the point. I like this concept because we were able to talk about our ideas with the theories and voice them to our professor.
One aspect of our conversations I was a bit upset about was the question on the exam that compared Special Education to racism. The question seemed a bit out there and I still don’t quite understand the comparison. This comparison that was made by one of my fellow peers was obviously done with absolutely no knowledge or background of special education. This was my take on the question however I was shocked to see that two other students were agreeing with the statement. I listened to their argument and gave my two cents on the topic; however, I wonder if they were only arguing so there grades can improve. What some were saying was completely off topic and quite frankly wrong.
I felt that some were abusing the time given to us and used it only to improve their grade. I took the same exam as everyone else and did just fine on it because I studied the work and remembered a lot of our topics. As a student who dealt with a learning disability who struggled through school and managed to come out of it on top and in Graduate school I am extremely proud of myself.
