Breaking the Ice on the First Class: Introducing the Name Game Activity

As the first day of class terminated, I had feelings of optimism and excitement for this course. The first day of this class was much different than the first day of any of my other classes. I thought it was an excellent idea to take the time and opportunity to introduce ourselves to the class and to share our own background, thoughts, and beliefs about education.
I feel that this is especially important for an education class because in my opinion it is extremely crucial and important that we feel a sense of comfort and openness because these are the initial tools necessary in order for learning to take place successfully. If on the other hand we kept to ourselves the entire semester and did not share our thoughts, opinions or beliefs, then it would not be possible to learn from each other and in my opinion, sharing is a big key to learning successfully.
As a comparison, I took an education class last semester and its concentration was on methods of teaching mathematics because that is the field in which I seek to teach. This is perhaps one of the most important of my education classes that I have taken because of the fact that it dealt solely with my major or concentration. However, the teacher never took the time out of the beginning of the course to allow us to introduce ourselves or share our beliefs and theories of education and so as a result, we basically kept to ourselves for the entire semester and we did not get the chance to learn much from each other.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed the first day of class and I thought it was extremely wise that you allowed us the chance to get to know each other and to share our beliefs. I feel very confident that we will not only learn a lot in this course, but also a lot from each other as well.
