Today we started off the class by walking up to someone we didn’t know and getting to know them as well as their research topic. This was uncomfortable at first because I am usually not an outgoing person and often get anxious when I have to talk to new people. However, forcing me to do something outside of my comfort zone was useful and after talking with this new person for a few minutes, I became more comfortable with the activity. Having to introduce yourself to other students in the class creates a warm environment and is something I can use when I teach. It also forces you to get to know more about the person than just his or her name. The more people know about each other, the more likely they will respect each other and the easier it will be to learn together.

We also had a panel discussion about how to be a good teacher. It was helpful to hear different views and perspectives on teaching as well as others’ teaching experiences. I think that teaching should be discussed like it was today in class because we can learn from each other’s experiences that might not necessarily come up in our own teaching. I was also glad to see so many people passionate and excited about teaching as well as genuinely concerned about their students being as successful as they can.
