The Community of Respect activity was a good exercise because it can be used in any class no matter the subject or the age of the students. Although the activity was about creating rules for the classroom, the title alone stood out. The word community implies that the class is already united as a community and the word respect allows the students to feel that the rules they are creating will be rules that allow them to feel respected. Since the word “rule” is not used in the title, the activity seems to be more of an informal way to set guidelines.
This type is of activity is especially useful in a classroom of older students because they are more opinionated and if they do not feel respected they will not participate. This leads to the question, how important is it to have a community of respect in order for students to learn. Students not only have to be respectful to each other but also to the teacher. If the students are fooling around the entire class, not only will they distract the other students from learning, but the teacher will be less motivated to help the students. If the students show respect, they will feel more comfortable around one another which would make it easier to share their own opinion even if they do not agree with the rest of the class. Having this respect is important when it comes to classroom discussions and presentations.
A lot of times students are very nervous to share in a discussion and especially nervous when presenting. Disrespectful students could be a distraction which allows the student sharing to let their nerves control their thoughts. It is extremely important to have a community of respect in order for the class to successfully function as a whole.
