We began the class today, January 20th, by going over the name game again. I liked the way it reinforced our ability to remember the names of all our classmates. Immediately after this we went over the syllabus. After going over the syllabus we had an exercise called community respect. I like the way the Professor asked each of the students how they wanted to be treated, for example one student said the other students should respectfully remain quiet when a student is talking. Another student said that no one should laugh if someone says something foolish or if one makes a mistake.
Respect is a two way street. To get respect you have to show respect. I particularly like this exercise because so often we don't even realize how what we say or do can show a lack of respect and may embarrass or offend someone needlessly. This is also a good exercise to use when I teach, especially in the Middle School level or the High School level where respect for each other is often lacking. The community respect exercise along with the name game from our last class are good ways to break the ice and start the school year on a positive note when I start teaching my own students.
