Upon entering classroom I had some preconceived notions due to my research on webct about the course materials but I was relieved to see some familiar faces as I walked through the door. I was quite unsure what to expect. Previously I had looked on webct at the course section that appeared to be quite overwhelming for myself; in fact it created a panic when I saw there was an assignment due only one day after our first meeting. In addition to becoming overwhelmed by the workload I reviewed the syllabus and the readings, which strengthened my concern for this class.
After sitting through our first class it is apparent that there is an over load of assignments and course material but the environment that was created will make the semester quite pleasant.
The environment that was created in the classroom by playing the name game was a completely different level than I had experienced in any of my other classes. I for one enjoy small intimate classes that create a comfortable setting for every student to learn and interact. The name game was responsible for creating that setting in EDI 600.
I believe now every time we have class on Tuesdays from 5-6:50 pm each student will have the respect for the other students by acknowledging their presences in the classroom. Our comfortable environment will allow all questions and concerns to be voiced without the feeling of others might think that is dumb or stupid. I believe that this class will be a prime role model for other graduate level education classes. EDI 600 appears to be challenging and demanding but seems as though it will provide excellent results.
In my opinion it is apparent that the name game was a source of motivation for the class to feel comfortable. The name game served as a way to break the ice. Motivation and determination are very important characteristics in the classroom. Teachers need to give the students a reason to be present in class in addition the drive and ambition to learn. If the teacher is inadequate at providing these key factors to their students the classroom will be an unsuccessful and boring place.
As teachers we need to think outside the box. I personally believe that it is always best if you can relate your teaching to real life concepts or situations that the children can understand. Better yet as teachers you need to take the time out to learn about your students and hope to teach within means of their interests. These means will keep the students motivated and enticed to continue their learning process and put an emphasis on their passions. I believe the great feeling of being able to help another individual is what drives myself every day to pursue my path in education. I would truly love to make a difference in the world, thus why not benefit the youth of our world.
It will be my hopes from this course to gain vast knowledge to use one day in my own classroom. I look forward to many games and interesting encounters throughout the semester.
