While reflecting on today’s class I can’t help but think of how the basic backbone of any successful classroom, whether it be on the middle school, high school, or the college level, is based on mutual respect. Respect shared by both the students and the instructor. In today’s class we went over respect in the classroom and what was expected from us, the students.
I thought it was a good idea to ask us, the students, what we valued most when it concerns respect in the classroom. There were great ideas that were discussed such as not being late, being respectful of each others opinions, keeping cell phones on silent, etc. Stressing the importance of respect was helpful not only in our class, but will also be helpful in our future classrooms as teachers. But more importantly this tied into what we learned on the first day.
The main theme on the first day of class was creating a calm and relaxed environment inside the classroom. This was successful by the use of the name game that we all participated in to help dissipate and anxiety on the first day of class. There cannot be a successful class where students learn and acquire information if they are not relaxed. Also students and teachers can’t be relaxed if they are not respected by everyone. It all connects to one another and is vital to the success of the students and the class as a whole.
To conclude this journal I thought the lesson was effective and tied into the bigger picture that we as future educators face. Being respectful and creating a calm environment if very important. I also read the first chapter of the book and thought it set up very well what the tone of the book will be. The first chapter discussed briefly Vygotsky and how important the connection between students and their teacher is.
