In looking back at today’s class I found that the panel discussion was very insightful. Each member of the panel had a different background in the educational field, therefore the information and ideas that were passed around were very interesting. A lot of the questions I thought were good questions, not just “filler” questions to fill up the time.
One question I thought was good was the question about dealing with class clowns and unmotivated students. In this discussion I learned how do better deal with unmotivated students, what to do, and what not to do when dealing with them. Every teacher in their career will eventually come across students who are either unmotivated or are class clowns. If the teacher is armed with the right knowledge on how to deal with them, the situation can be successfully resolved.
With being three classes in to the semester now I find myself enjoying the class more. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it the first two days, but I felt somewhat overwhelmed, not during the class itself, but with the work load that comes with it. I must admit I still feel slightly overwhelmed, especially since I am taking more classes this semester and I am very busy with other activities. But I am determined to do well in this class. I am also very excited at how the semester can potentially go in this class.
After reading chapter one of “Understanding Youths” I felt as thought I was reviewing old information that I had already acquired during my other education classes while learning new information tied to it. One part that stuck out in my mind was when Vygotsky was discussed.
One thing that was discussed that I though was important to mention was what Vygotsky referred to as interpsychological development, or know otherwise as collaborative learning. This is very important in the learning process. Another topic touched on was scaffolding. Scaffolding helps teachers create strategies that will in turn help the student along in their development. This is something that was extensively discussed in my other education classes. In conclusion I felt that the first full week of classes was not only a success but also a learning process for everyone in our class. I look forward to the next class.
