Respecting each other’s professions: My view of child-parent relationship

I think children should respect their parents’ professions. We are experiencing an economic crisis and thousands of people are losing their jobs every week. I was reading a newspaper article last week about a husband and father of three who lost his job and became a pizza delivery man to support his family. His job is far from glamorous but his children should respect his job because he is sacrificing a lot to support his family.

I also believe that parents should respect their child’s career choice. Many parents push college on their children, but a college education is not for everyone. Some people prefer “hands on” jobs and they are very handy. These people usually go to trade schools or join unions. Many believe that people who do not go to college do not make a lot of money, but that is not always true; people who are in unions have the potential to make a lot of money. Other people choose to work for their family’s business after they finish high school.

I think parents should give their children advice about what they think the best career path is for their child, but it is ultimately up to the child to follow his/her destiny. I think parents should always look out for their child’s best interest, but sometimes children need to learn the hard way and make mistakes on their own.
