In reflecting on today’s class I though the topic of creativity was a good topic to discuss. I believe creativity is key to a successful education. Creativity promotes academic succeed. But creativity is not limited to when you are a child or when you’re in school. Students, teachers, and anyone else should try to be creative everyday. Some of the greatest artists were very creative.
The question though of how do you define creativity has been asked often.
Creativity is not something that is clear cut that can be easily seen. Creativity in the classroom can be seen when a child goes beyond what is asked of them. It is doing something unique that adds to the class. A teacher being creative is also important. If a teacher is not creative than their students progress and motivation suffer.
One of the biggest problems in education is getting children to want to learn. A lot of this has to do with teachers not being creative enough. If a student has to sit through a lecture with no interaction with the teacher or his/her classmates than not only is it not an engaging environment, they are not learning as much from the class that they potentially could. Teachers should encourage students to take risks and be creative. But they must also be cautious when encouraging them to take risks, because not all risk taking involves creativity or positive behavior.
As discussed in class it was generally agreed that teachers and parents should promote either their student or child to take risks. But they must be careful what risks they allow their students to take. Adolescents face a lot different risk taking activities in their life. Drugs, unsafe sex, alcohol, and other potentially dangerous behavior can be considered negative risk taking. Teacher and parents sometimes do not promote risk taking with their students or child because they are afraid that they will be faced with these types of risks.
I think parents should understand though that they cannot stop their child from potentially being faced with these risks. Instead they should educate them on these risks so that they can make positive decisions on their own. If the child can learn how to do that, then they themselves will be more inclined risks and understand which ones are positive and negative. Creativity and smart risk taking is key to a child’s academic success and will create overall happiness in their life.
