I enjoyed the movie “ Tough Guise” that we watched in class today. I defiantly felt that there was a correlation between the school shootings and male masculinity. When children’s masculinity is threatened or challenged, many boys turn to violence to prove to others that they aren’t weak.
I do feel that in school’s boys more than women are taught to act tough and not show weakness. In middle school if a child isn’t strong or acts feminine by showing emotions, the boy is mostly made fun of for being out of the norm. Boys who don’t fit into the norm are more likely to isolate themselves and this leads to them fitting back though school violence.
I think that the media does have an impact on boys because I know that I also wanted to be like the male heroes like batman and the Terminator that I saw in the movies. I do find that I was more likely to try to act tough and show that I can handle myself when I was in school when I was around a group of kids who were all males. Males many times size each other up at try to test each other. I don’t think anything is wrong with it but I do think that the dangers of bullying should be more stressed in schools because it can lead to terrible things if it isn’t regulated. Children sometimes don’t realize that there are physical consequences to bullying as well as mental consequences. Children can start to realize that what they say or do does have an impact on another person acts of cyperbullying which might not appear so harmless to some individuals when in fact they are.
