I enjoyed today’s class dealing with gender differences in men and women. I feel that stereotypes of men and women are seen throughout advertisements even if some are offensive to women. The advertising companies do what they have to do to sell a product even if it may have a negative influence on a group of people. Many women do see models on T.V and in advertisements that are super skinny and attractive and this can put pressure on girls at a young age to want to be skinny. Many children can develop eating disorders when they try to live up to the expectations set upon them from the media.

We compared the stereotypes of men and women through looking at magazine ads. The Men’s Health magazine portrayed men as tough, build stern men and the Women’s Cosmopolitan magazine portrayed women as innocent, skinny and warm. These stereotypes can put pressure on young kids and the main lesson is to teach kids that it is unrealistic to want to try to live up to the expectations of the people they see in magazines.

I though the video we saw in class titled Killing Us softly only showed the side of advertising one way in that it is offensive and degrading to women. I thought the video was more of a source of propaganda set out to criticize ways that companies advertise their products. I think that advertisers have a right to use whatever tactic they want to sell a product even if the best way is through sex. I thought it was very odd that Killing Us softy talked about how offensive it is to women to use sex to sell products but they didn’t talk about how effective it is to sell products or how many jobs and new opportunities these campaigns gave to many people. I found the spokes person in this campaign to be a nagger and a complainer and after a while I really had a hard to time watching the video segment due to everything being one sided. It reminded me on a cheesy Michael Moore documentary.
