Morality: Are today’s adolescents getting worse?

Are today’s adolescents getting worse with their morality? I believe that in general as though the moral behavior of today’s adolescents is getting worse. I remember always hearing stories of how adolescents acted in the past. They were respectful, obedient, and acted their age. In previous generations adolescents knew their place and did not question it. They knew they were not mature enough to act like adults and in turn they did not try to, at least not as openly as today’s adolescents do.

The moral behavior of today’s adolescents is absolutely horrible. Today’s adolescents are not ashamed of anything. They smoke, they drink, and they have sex, among other things. What’s worse is they flaunt all of this as though there is nothing wrong with it. Today’s adolescents want nothing more than to be adults. They wish their adolescents away and unfortunately some of them do lose their adolescents at the age of 12 or 14 and as we say “have to grow up fast.” Bullying and even violence are becoming major issues in middle and high schools all across America. School shootings, while fortunately are not common, do happen.

I believe that, in part, the deterioration in the moral behavior of today’s adolescents is due to the need for acceptance. Adolescents might turn to drugs and alcohol because they feel as though it is the only way they can be part of a group. Likewise, girls may turn to sex because they want to feel “loved” by their boyfriends. On the other hand, adolescents may turn to bullying and violence because they may feel as though it is the only way their voices can be heard and their true feelings can be expressed. They may not have the words to express how they feel, or when they do express themselves with words they are not listened to or taken seriously.
