I found the movie “Killing Us Softly 3” to be an interesting perspective to the world of gender in advertising. Although I feel that people are not depicted fairly in the media, I do feel like this movie was much exaggerated. One minute women are trying to say that they are celebrating their bodies and they are proud of the way they look and the next minute they are complaining about using half naked women in advertisements.
While I do feel that women are not always portrayed in the best light in advertising, I do not think it is as bad as this movie made it seem. I find it hard to believe that domestic abuse increases with these types of advertisements. I believe that women should be proud of how they look, no matter what they look like. I think people over analyze the use of sex in advertising and I do not think it will decrease because of the popularity.
The one thing I do disagree with is the use of overly skinny women in advertising. Yes, people want to see in-shape women but many advertisements show unrealistic images. Adolescents are very vulnerable to these images and I do believe that they have a large impact on females. People can say it is from other factors but no matter how many times your parents tell you that you are beautiful the way you are, you see these ads and become envious of these skinny models. Young girls need to realize that there is more to beauty then the size of your waist and these advertisements do not help.
Along with men constantly telling women that it is they who are the dominant sex, the media is constantly telling women that they are not good enough. It is one thing to want to exercise to be healthy and another to starve yourself so you can fit into a smaller pant size. Adolescent girls need to be taught ways to boost their self-confidence so that they do not end up brain washed with images of such a small percentage of women.
