I thought the activity in today’s class was very interesting. I think our discussions showed more about the characteristics of males and females then our lists did. I was surprised how most males felt that they fell into the characteristics they placed in the box while most females felt that they fell into the characteristics out of the box. I believe this shows reflections of society’s view of a man-dominated world. Men act how society thinks they should act where a lot of modern day women rebel away from that image. I think things would work better if people cooperated regardless of gender.
I was also surprised to see how condescending the males were even thought they were only kidding around. I think males and females should be supportive of each other and learn to compromise with each other. If people were able to do this, maybe one day people would be considered truly equal regardless of their gender.
I found the standards of womanly behavior in China to be extremely strict. I do not think that I would be able to live under those rules because I would feel inferior. There are many reasons why women in America have low self-esteem also. I believe a lot has to do with society’s view of how women should act. If there was not so much pressure on the appearance, up keep and mannerisms of women, it would be much easier to build self-confidence. Men almost have self-confidence built into them because of society’s views. This limits the opportunities for women in all areas. The most confidence diminishing part is when we see these women who fit into the stepford wife identity, that are just told what to do and do not think for themselves. I am happy to see the number of women in college rising because with an education, women can learn how to feel empowered and gain that sense of confidence.
