Today, for class we spent the entire period watching a movie. The movie was called October Sky, and was based on a high school student making a rocket with his friends. He started out as a pretty popular student, focusing on his image and his social status within his grade, and then one day after seeing and learning about flying stars and space, he became incredibly interested about space and wanted to learn how to build a rocket. He started talking to the “grades biggest nerd” and hanging out with him and making the rocket together.

Homer was discouraged against so much throughout the movie. His father didn’t care for his interest in rockets, his principle didn’t care, and his classmates all ridiculed him. The only people that truly seemed to stay by his side the entire time were his close friends (who joined him in this project), his teacher, and his mother.

I feel that his father was really wrong in guiding Homer to work in the mines and to stop focusing on the garbage such as rockets. He wanted Homer to live his life, and didn’t care about Homer’s feelings. He talked down to his son constantly and really had a bad relationship with him. The people who stuck by Homer in his life, such as his teacher and friends, helped motivate him to keep going and to do what his heart felt was right. Home was deeply unhappy when he tried to work in the mines for his father, that wasn’t what he wanted to do. He followed his heart and completed his project and went off to the science fair, with the hopes of receiving his scholarship. This goes to show that even when you feel like everyone is against you, talking down to you, and doesn’t believe in you, if you believe in yourself and don’t quit on yourself, you will go very far in life.
