Don't just wish your dream come true, make it!

Don't just wish your dream come true, make it!

In the movie October Sky which we saw in class, Homer did not want to be a coal miner. He saw how people in the town gave up and accepted their fate to be coal miners. The future was bleak for young people in the town except for a fortunate few who might get sports scholarships to college. Homer would not accept this fate. He wanted a better life for himself. Seeing Sputnik blaze across the sky was the beginning of his dream. Space exploration inspired him and was his motivation.

I think the first thing a person needs to do to maintain motivation is to be inspired by a dream, a goal that one really wants to reach. Space exploration was Homers motivation. He wanted to go into space, and therefore began to build rockets for the science fair to get a scholarship. He saw this as his way out of the life he did not want. Another factor in maintaining motivation is to have a strong role model. In the movie Homer had his teacher as his role model. She knew he wanted to have a better life and did everything she could to help him. Homer had good friends which gave him a strong support group; they had faith in his abilities. This too helped him maintain motivation. When people believe in you it builds up your self esteem and helps you to believe in yourself.

Another factor is that you need to have a strong personality. Finally and foremost I have learned from personal experience that motivation needs determination and then a plan of action. With both determination and a plan it becomes possible to keep your eyes on your goal and remain focused. And, as each step brings you closer to your goal, your motivation increases. We saw this in the movie. Each step of the way Homer’s will became stronger. He had obstacles but they only made him more determined. Even when he had to work in the coal mines after his father’s accident he knew that this life was not for him.

This was an inspirational motivating movie because it teaches you that you cannot give up when times are tough. Dreams can come true with hard work, and not by simply wishing it to come true.
