During class on Tuesday we had a debate. The debate featured two different groups. One group believed that money is important for one to be happy. While the other group believed that money does not grant happiness. I believe that money does not bring happiness to a person. This is proved by many of the children of wealthy people. Many of these children get involved with drugs and alcohol. I think that these children of rich people are ultimately unhappy because they are not producing anything for society. Many of them just receive things from their parents for nothing. When I go to my local deli the guys who work there are most likely not wealthy. They are some of the happiest people I know. This is because they work extremely hard and produce productive things for society.
I think the opposing group made some good arguments but for the most part they were wrong. You do not need to pay the mortgage on the house or travel to islands in order to be a happy person. What makes someone happy is if they are making a positive difference on the society. Donating to charities and volunteering at animal shelters can make someone’s life more meaningful and productive. This is why I believe that money does not create happiness for people. A person in my opinion ultimately produces her own happiness or sadness.
