Motivation: What does Homer's motivation come from?

In the movie October Sky, Homer is extremely motivated to do his rocket project. Where does his motivation come from. I believe that Homer is motivated by several things in October Sky.

First, he is motivated positively by his teacher, Miss Willey. She is the epitome of what a teacher should be. She pours her whole heart into teaching and wants the absolute best for her students; she just wants them to be happy. When Miss Willey gives Homer the book and tells him she believes in him, she has a huge impact on him. She is one of the only adults who supports his rocket-building and I believe he wouldn't have kept up with it if she wasn't positive and encouraging.

Homer is also motivated by his father, but in a different way. Rather than supporting Homer, his father constantly tells him he is crazy for spending his time building rockets. He even throws Homer's materials in the garbage! This motivates Homer to work even harder than he already was in order to prove his father wrong.

He was also motivated to work harder to prove society wrong. He wanted to prove that not everyone in his town has to mine coal, but that there are other paths and roads for people to go down. Homer dreams big and shows others that it’s alright to do something different and follow your passion.
