Erik Erikson’s model for identity is something that came just at the right time for me. Two years ago, I thought running the family business was “what I was meant to do.” I have since come to realize that although it is one possible future for me; it is not what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Before last nights class, I didn’t understand why I was not satisfied in my career. I felt like my insatiable appetite was something that was wrong with me. What I realize now, is that I have been in a false sense of foreclosure initially which lead to moratorium. Identity is a subject that of particular interest to me.
I think happiness is much easier to attain when you understand why you feel the way you do. In reality, Erikson’s model probably isn’t the absolute answer for every right or wrong action you have chosen to do. I think the individual has to accept accountability for their decisions. However, what it does do, is give you a basic primer for the psychological episodes one goes through in life.
