What is Creativity?

What is creativity? I suppose creativity would be the birth of new ideas, concepts, and relationships. It is essentially, the act of making something new via the process of original thought.

Creativity is an interesting and complex notion because of its subjective nature. If someone finds something creative, someone else might find it unoriginal. This is why it is extremely difficult to measure creativity. I feel this skill is mostly associated with the arts, whether it be literature, the visual arts, or the performing arts. Novels are often portrayed as creative when they are innovative, and completely different from other books. Actors are constantly creating as a script is nothing more than a blueprint. It is up to the actor to really create his/her character through various character choices. Musicians create memorable lyrics and melodic tunes. But creativity is not limited to the arts, but rather, it can be extended to all facets of all professions. Teachers, advertisers, architects all have a creative outlet to express themselves in an artistic way. As prospective high school teachers we constantly must be creative in order to keep class interesting and engaging.

Creativity might not always provide a positive experience. Artists of any kind tend to be very passionate about their work and creativity, and if multiple artists are working on the same project there are times where creativity clashes over something specific and quarrels arise. Many relationships and partners have unfortunately been split over creative differences.

Psychologically, many say that those who are left handed tend to be more creative, because they use more of the right side of their brain which fosters intuitiveness, creativity and the imagination. Whether this is true, I do not know but it interesting to think that certain individuals have predetermined skills, such as creativity.
