After watching October Sky for the first time, I thought it was a great movie. Not only was it inspiring, it also gave me the desire to help my students follow their dreams even if they seem impossible.

Although the entire movie was very inspiring, I especially took note of the influence and dedication that the science teacher Ms. Riley had upon her students. Homer and the Rocket boys had much support from several different people in the town, but without Ms. Riley and her motivation to help these boys achieve their dreams, it would have all been impossible.

Besides the drive that Homer had to follow his dreams no matter how many times he failed and got knocked down by others, Ms. Riley was the one person in the movie who really inspired me. I thought it was great how she never lost hope in her students. Not only did she believe in them, she pushed them to achieve bigger and better accomplishments other than just the usual.

Believing in people is so important especially in a profession such as teaching. Teachers should not only motivate his/her students, but inspire them to achieve great things in life. After watching the movie, I would love to be half the teacher that Ms. Riley was to her students. Not only was she an inspiration to the Rocket Boys, but I believe she was an inspiration to other students and those who have seen the film.

Be sure to read Rocket Boys, the book the movie is based on. It's a great read and truly inspiring. Then you'll know the real story. Hickam has help for teachers who use his book and movie in their classes. Go to www.homerhickam.com.
