I thoroughly enjoyed last night’s class. The movie October Sky was fantastic. I will add this movie and the ensuing discussion on what motivates children to my staff development for the beginning of the year. I may even show the movie to our students next year in the beginning of the term to get them thinking of ways to find their dream and find their passion. Thank you for sharing this.

How to motivate an unmotivated child is very difficult. Sometimes you want to give up because nothing seems to be working or sinking in. It is also time consuming and it really is impossible for a teacher to do this with every single one of his or her students. But there is always one or two that you connect with and whose lives you may change for the better. The others you can be a positive influence and attempt to teach them ways to figure out their own potential.

Although a teacher can be helpful to spark an interest in a child by exposing and introducing them to many different things, and a parent can be supportive and provide the same, it ultimately is up to the child to “want” something bad enough to move into action. I think a great number of children have dreams of something but they lack the desire to make these dreams happen. They may also lack the skills to figure out how to work toward the dream and become unmotivated. They may also have a dream in mind and when they do not attain it right away they become discouraged and give up.

One thing that a teacher can do is to teacher children that no matter how big the dream there is a way of getting there they just have to work toward little goals to get to the big one. These little tasks can be highly motivating as they are attainable in the near future and can build the confidence in the child. Teachers must instruct children on how to deal with failure and mistakes and to use the event as a learning experience.

have always believed in the saying “there is no can’t only won’t.”
