I believe the panel discussion activity was a great opportunity for our class to speak about the questions and concerns we have about teaching adolescents. Listening to the advice and experiences of my peers was very insightful, and made me aware that I am not alone with anxiety when it comes to classroom management and the mystery of adolescents.
Unruly student’s can be a nightmare for any teacher, and it is very important to learn some strategies in handling the situation before it get completely “out of hand”. “But how?” is the big question. I learned from my peers that 1) it is very important not to pay too much attention to negative behavior, 2) never let a student know that you are affected by there behavior (ex: get made and yell at a student in class), because then you give that student the “upper hand”, and risk the respect you have from other students 3) pat too much attention to the disruptive students “takes away” and disrupts the class.
One of the most important pieces of advice was offered by Professor Boyanton, when she said, “remember that there may be a reason for a student’s behavior”. I believe as a teacher that is very important take into consideration, especially when dealing with adolescents. There are so many developmental, emotional, psychological, and physical factors involving an adolescent student that influences the behavior – personally and academically. Maybe I will not be able to solve every adolescent mystery, but it important to become familiar with students and heir behavior to become a successful teacher.
