My first class: Embrace the challenge

Coming into this class I did not have any specific expectations. It's difficult to formulate expectations being that every teacher, workload, curriculum, and class community is unique. I'd like to use this journal entry to briefly discuss each of these points and how my expectations in each area were effected by only one hour and twenty minutes of being in the classroom.
It's hard to expect how a teacher will teach, whether it be using an auditory, visual, or hands-on approach. From attending the first class I feel as if this class will encompass all three approaches. Personally I learn best in a hands-on/visual atmosphere. Nothing beats a realistic experience.
However, I did enjoy "playing" the Name Game in which we were able to exercise our auditory and visual strengths. We were able to listen to each others names and at the same time visualize their face. I felt that this was a great ice breaker and found it to be fun as well.
I'm not going to lie, I felt overwhelmed when I saw the workload involved in this class. However, I did pick a self management topic of "procrastination", which is a major obstacle I've been trying to overcome. Working full time, having a family and going to school is pretty tough so it becomes easy to slip into a pattern of procrastination. The curriculum in this class is challenging and will force me to buckle down and focus on specific tasks which require much thought and have strict deadlines. I may not like it, but it's the push that I need.
I had a positive vibe from the class community. The other students seemed open, friendly, helpful and it seems that we share an easy-going sense of humor which helps to relieve anxiety.
I am looking forward to the journey this class is going to provide for me. I hope I can look back on this class and feel a sense of accomplishment for overcoming the habit of procrastination that I've become so accustomed to after many years. I believe my self management will be a success, and have already chosen a research topic which I am eager to learn more about. .
