Today was the first day of class in which we focused primarily on introducing ourselves to one another. We began by introducing ourselves to some of our neighbors and then proceeded to play the name game. The main idea of the name game was to learn each other’s names and to develop a more personal setting in the classroom.

Part of the name game was to not only share your name, but to come up with a creative device to help everyone remember your name. This was a very important aspect in not only the game, but with teaching in general. Students learn through association. If a student can relate a topic to something they already know, they have more of a chance of actually learning rather than memorization. In the normal version of the name game, usually students go around memorizing students names with no association. Personally for me this is a very hard task, and usually doesn’t last more than the hour we are in class. However, with the version we played I can name the entire class, simply by their creative associations they shared with their names. Personally, I think this is a very important association between teaching and learning.

Also we discovered the reoccurring theme of community. Positive aspects of a community are the ability to invoke the learning process in which ultimately invites students to learn. In order to induce learning students must feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. Today was an ice breaker in which I personally felt more welcomed to come and speak freely and comfortably. As a teacher this is also a very important aspect of a classroom in which it is necessary to be aware and conscious of. .
