Today in class we played the name game. The name game was a great ice breaker for the first class and it was also fun. What I liked about the game was that everyone had to stay focused and listen to each person while they were speaking in order to remember everyone’s name. In other classes where the teacher has us go around the room and say our names I noticed that not everyone was paying attention. There was also no interaction between the classmates. The name game allowed interaction among the class and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Another thing I liked about the game was the use of a strategy to help everyone memorize the different names. The principal of coming up with a strategy was to make it easier for us to link the name with something else that was easy to remember. This allowed the students to show their creativity. As a teacher, you should try to come up with strategies to help your students memorize things. However, everyone remembers things differently and certain strategies may not work for all students. For example some students found that placing another word with the name only made it more difficult to remember all of the names, while some found it easier. One student suggested that we narrow down the category of what the accompanying word could be. That strategy may work better for some students.
Overall the first class taught me that not everyone learns or memorizes things the same way. As a teacher you need to be aware of that and treat each student independently. A teacher should encourage their students to come up with their own strategies to help them remember the material. I found the name game to be very effective because we now know, and are more comfortable, with each other. .
