Walking into today’s class I was excited to start the panel discussion, I really wanted to learn more about what experienced teachers feel when they’re in a classroom. We started off again by going over names, I remembered everyone but the few new students we got last class. It really is true that repetition is key to memorization, if we hadn’t played the name game I doubt I would’ve remembered a lot of people’s names or at least have gotten them confused.

We then went over journals, one of the journals was talking about the first day. It described how I was someone’s partner in the beginning and how I helped them learn more about their other classes. I thought it was really cool how I actually did something that made one of my classmates write about it. If you see your name up on the board in a positive way it makes you feel a little bit more confident and comfortable in the classroom. This showed me in particular that positive feedback is important in a classroom, especially for students who don’t have a high self-esteem.

After reading journals we wrote down what we were uncomfortable about going into a classroom and then got to discuss it with people around us. I was surprised to find that a lot of people had the same fear as me. When we asked the experienced teachers about how they deal with misbehaved classes or students they told us a bunch of helpful ideas. I found out that being confident in the classroom as well as stern can help. We discussed that not being mean, but laying down the rules, and consequences right away will help students know what not to do. Also a system of rewards for good behavior is very successful because it makes students feel special for good behavior, rather than embarrassed for bad.

Today’s lesson was helpful and it taught me that if I want to be treated with respect I need to treat my students the same way, and take into consideration the feedback they give me as well. The experienced teachers helped mellow my fears about my first few days in the classroom.
