As a future speech pathologist I need to understand the different cognitive stages of development. When I am working with a child I need to understand what level of cognitive development the child is at. If I understand what stage the child is at, and what mental skills they have, I will be able to work with them better. By understanding the stages of mental development I will be able to assign them tasks that are doable for them, and what expectations to have for them.
I also liked today’s class because we went over the use of strategies and repetition again. I have done that same exercise in other classes previously, however, I did not do as well as I did today. Today I separated the words into similar groups and made a list. I then re-wrote those lists to help myself memorize them. After rewriting them I read them over and over again to memorize them better.

I enjoyed today’s class very much. I agree more with Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories on human development than I do with Erickson’s. However, both theories are still just guidelines to what the development is normally. There will always exceptions to these theories. For example a child may develop faster than another and will show signs of the next level of development before he is in the next age category.
