In my opinion what kills adolescent’s motivation are many things. It could either be that the teachers themselves are not motivated to teach or don’t show any enjoyment or excitement to the material that they are teaching. If this is the case student won’t be engaged and could cause lock of participation among the students. It could also be blame on the High-stake testing.
I feel that nowadays teachers are teaching for the test, sometimes forgetting whether students are learning or not. They based and construct their lessons around the test that the students will be taking. This doesn’t allow room for something different because at the end of the day the teachers have to meet what is stated in the school curriculum. I think that High-stake testing puts a lot of pressure on teachers because through the students’ tests results they are being evaluated. I have noticed during my observation hours some teachers telling their students “you have to know this because this is what is going to be in the reagents”. Therefore I feel that high-stake testing is always in a teachers mind and they don’t really have a choice but to teach for the test.
