How can one become a great teacher? Is being a great teacher something we were born with or we learn afterwards? From this second class, I learned many things. Especially, we have the panel discussion today and we discuss about how one can become a great teacher and what is difficult when we teach something for students. In this journal, I would like to write about my experience, and my opinion about how one can become a great teacher.

During the class, I become a panelist because I have a home tutor experience for one year and half in Japan when I was university students. At that time, I teach two elementary school students twice a week. Stick with two specific children for one year and half was great experience because I could see a lot of change and growth. At the beginning, I struggled with them a lot because I could not handle those children and I couldn’t manage them efficiently. I didn’t build the relationship which could trust each other. Moreover, I didn’t have any teaching experience so I misunderstand to tell the answer is teaching.

I struggled for several months, and I solve each problem step by step. One day, I bring history comic book and read with them. I ask their life and I try to talk what they like, not only about study. Therefore, both students become closer day by day. I also found that I taught the answer too fast. I forget to give a time to think for them. At the same time, I understand educator should think about the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can do with help. Otherwise, over helped might interfere students’ development or memorizing.

How can one become a great teacher? In my opinion, good teachers strike a balance between various things. For example, balance between friendship and respect or strict and kindness. To think how much assist students need also important because we need to keep balance between much and less. Good teacher can think about students and adjust for them on the spot. Teaching is always live, so I think this skill is very important. Moreover, some other panelist talked about class management. I don’t have professional teacher experience but if I imagine, I agree with that idea too.

Is being a great teacher something we were born with or we learn afterwards? I think if educator experiences many classes, they can learn the important aspects such as; class management, communication skill, how to strike a balance, how to think and how to adjust for a students. Therefore, I think we learn afterwards to be a great teacher.
