Yesterday’s class was really like a big party. I really enjoyed the time I spent with my classmates and my Professor. During the group presentation of students from different countries, all of us not only got to know the features and characters of various types of cultures, but also learned to cherish and appreciate our own culture. In addition, Chinese Spring Festival and Valentine’s Day would happen on the same day this year; therefore everyone seemed very excited about the comparison between the eastern and the western culture.
So many interesting things that could be mentioned here, such as SP showed us his black belt which represented the highest level of Takoodo in a very funny way, and the Italian classmate said that they are proud of their country because they have the hottest girls in the world. What’s more, when we prepared our own presentation, I also learned how to cooperate with others and took advantage of team work spirit to organize a meaningful presentation. Even though we had many different views on the same topic, still each of us respected others’ opinions and tried to make a consensus, and finally our presentation was greatly welcomed by our classmates with the help of Professor’s PPT. I was really impressive about that because this was the first time for me to show Chinese culture to foreign people, especially in the United States, and everyone’s respect towards our country and culture made me feel proud of being a Chinese.
In the last section of bringing questions to different groups, I solved a question which puzzled me for a long time about the adult ceremony of Jewish people. Because of their luxury ceremony always amazed me, and I often felt curious about if every Jewish child would be given that fantastic ceremony. Then the Jewish students told me that only in America do they hold such kind of ceremony, but in some other places they will go to the holy river and receive the baptize. Everyone has a sense of achievement of spreading their own culture to other people, because our class also represents a small world.
In general, today’s class let all the students be familiar with each other which not only broadened our horizon but also let us realize the importance of respecting and appreciating cultures from all over the world. I suspected that in terms of educational psychology, this activity aimed to let the future TESOL educators learn to adjust to a class environment which was constituted by students of different backgrounds and appreciate each individual’s custom, character, and personality.
