Today I am pretty excited not only because we had a very knowledgeable class but also I saw my journal was shown during the journal sharing part. It is for sure that I will be a big fan of this course. As for the content of our class today, I think the Erikson’s theory attracted most of my attention. Actually I have studied the comparison between Freud and Erikson’s stages of psychology development. However, today’s class offered me a completely insight of what I learned before. Professor provided many interesting and vivid stories for us, which help me to understand the abstract theory more deeply. For example, I always confused as to how do initiative and guilt applied on individuals among 3-5years old. Nevertheless the interesting story told me that initiative stands for imagination, creativity and curiosity.
In addition, when professor discovered that we felt excited about children’s curiosity of sex, she suggested us to talk with each neighbor. From the discussion I realized that we should follow children’s’ way of thinking towards some special issues, that is to say they could neither be blamed nor told via adults’ way. I remembered when my 5 years old cousin told her mother that she wanted a boyfriend, her mom smiled at her and said:” baby, your Teddy Bear is your best boyfriend right now.” Since then seldom did she mention boyfriend and she altered her attention to some other things. I supposed that it is because she knew she has an intimate partner- Teddy Bear, who could not only play with her all the time but also make her happy. Interestingly she defined this role as a “boyfriend,” that is the reason why I said that we should follow children’s way of thinking towards some issue, for their need is different from ours.
In the end of the class, we all enjoyed the video which demonstrated the theory proposed by Piaget, and I was impressed with many familiar phenomenons which we may see everyday but reflected some important theory of educational psychology. For example, the video showed that children would suggest that the higher the cup is, the more water it contains. However, they are unable to figure out the width of the cup also determined the amount of water it holds. This video illustrated Piaget’s theory on perceptual centration, which asserts that children could only focus on one characteristic or aspect of an issue.
Generally I always believe that I could learn a lot from this course through an interesting and easy way, and I am looking forward to the culture presentation in the next class. .
