In the dictionary, intelligence is defined as “the ability to think, learn facts and skills, and apply them.” This definition seems broad, vague, and rather confusing; as a result, I think that many people consider intelligence to represent how smart an individual is. However, I believe that intelligence is a combination of learning, interpreting, and understanding information and utilizing one’s interpersonal skills to interact with others in various situations.
My father is the most intelligent person I know. Not only is his knowledge of information and skills truly astounding, but he is also a compassionate soul who has the wonderful ability to relate to and communicate with such a wide variety of different people. In addition to being intelligent, my father is also wise; his deep understanding, keen discernment, and capacity for sound judgment make him an individual who I truly respect and admire.
I am amazed by the amount of information my father can understand, retain, and recall with ease. The diversity of topics and subjects he has knowledge of and the satisfaction he gains from sharing this knowledge makes it so interesting and rewarding to speak with him. I can speak with him about history, geography, literature, and many other subjects; he always has interesting facts and opinions to share. Every day, he explores online news sites and the Internet, making him well-versed in current events and other happenings around the world; whether it’s the current situation in Iraq or updates on the projects of the Walt Disney Company, he soaks up information like a sponge and enjoys sharing what he has learned with others. By simply talking to him for a few minutes, I gain perspective and feel enlightened, always learning something new.
In addition to being a very knowledgeable individual, my father also has the wonderful ability of being able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. If someone was to find the term “active listener” in the dictionary, his picture would be under the definition. He is so easy to talk to because he devotes his full attention to listening to what you have to say; he offers thoughtful and insightful comments and really understands not only what you are saying, but the emotions behind what you are saying. My father’s eloquence and interpersonal skills allow him to communicate with such a variety of different people; as an active listener and a knowledgeable, perceptive speaker, he is someone people enjoy conversing with. My father is such an intelligent person and a wonderful role model; I am so grateful to have him in my life.
