We learned a lot of valuable information this class. I was very excited about the topic when I heard it was learning styles. Every teacher is different, and they conduct classes in various ways. I think that by getting a better understanding of different learning styles we as teachers will be able to be more effective in a classroom. The goal is to have your students feel comfortable in the classroom as well as retain and understand important information. By knowing how each student acts within a classroom, and how they learn best you will be able to teach them better as well as ensure they understand what you are telling them.

A learning style is a preference for dealing with intellectual tasks in a particular way. We learned there are many different subsections of a person’s learning style. Being part of one subsection is neither better nor worse; it just means that you like to deal with things differently. These sections include impulsivity vs. reflectivity, field dependence vs. field independence, and visual vs. audio vs. tactile vs. verbal learners. After discussing these different learning styles we also went over Sternberg’s mental self-government styles. It was interesting that Sternberg was able to make the analogy between the government and the way people approach learning and understanding.

The next activity we did was to evaluate ourselves as learners. I found out some very interesting points about myself, and how I approach my work. I am reflective, field-independent, visual, audio, tactile, executive, hierarchic, global, internal, and conservative as a learner. After we evaluated ourselves we found out other people’s evaluations and saw how similar or different we were to each person. I thought it was interesting that some of my better friends in the class have a lot of similar learning techniques as me. It just shows that people are able to gravitate more towards people with similar likes, dislikes etc. from them without even knowing it. Today’s lesson was very interesting I found out a lot about myself, and I also found out that as a teacher I will have to try and accommodate a bunch of different learning styles, and child development. .
