I watched the movie October Sky for the first time when I was in high school, and watching it again today reminded me of how special and meaningful this film really is. The story of Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys is so inspirational, reminding us that determination, passion, dedication, hard work, and faith can allow us to achieve our dreams. What I really like about this story and this movie is the friendship between the Rocket Boys. Although others doubted and criticized their efforts in the beginning of their journey to create a rocket, their camaraderie and sense of purpose combined to make them believe that together, they could accomplish their goals. Even when life made their journey challenging, their friendship became a support system and their goals became a light at the end of the tunnel, giving them something to strive for.

After watching this movie, I felt uplifted. These four boys lived in a situation that seemed to doom them to a life where they remained in their dying town forever. However, their spirit and perseverance to accomplish their goals created an opportunity for themselves to have a prosperous future. It is inspiring to think that these boys could overcome so much; by believing in themselves, accepting the challenges and set-backs of their efforts and their lives, and learning from their experiences, the boys realized that nothing could stop them on their quest to shoot for the stars. One thing I learned from October Sky is that an individual has the power to change his or her life for the better. Sometimes life can be so frustrating; the challenges and difficulties we face can make us feel dejected, hopeless, and trapped in our current situations. However, the story of the Rocket Boys shows that if you believe in yourself and are prepared to work hard to achieve your dreams, anything is possible.

My favorite line from the movie was at the very end, when the Rocket Boys and their supporters watched as their last rocket was launched into the sky. Quentin said “Look at it go, Homer. This one’s gonna go for miles.” I believe that this quote has two meanings. It can refer to the rocket itself; after all of their hard work and perseverance, the Rocket Boys created a rocket that not only worked, but was designed and constructed well enough to soar into the sky. I think this quote can also refer to the Rocket Boys and their dreams. By the end of the movie, they have come so far, and their dedication and persistence are indicative of the bright futures that await them. The Rocket Boys each achieved their chance to make the most of their futures, and just like their rockets, they could finally soar.
