I LOVED the class tonight. Now I feel like I know a secret about remembering information. For a few years now I have considered myself to have a BAD memory. However, after this evenings class I know that I just wasn't using it correctly. I had a hard time with sensory memory because I always forget what I am doing or lose my train of thought easily.
I now know that I need to give ATTENTION to what I am doing as opposed to being on auto pilot mode. If I want to remember where I parked then I need to do more than just look at the "section blue A" sign. I have to actively remember it by voluntarily deciding to remember it. Then once it is on my short term memory I need to rehearse it by using elaborate rehearsal. I could say to myself: BLUE A: A for Amanda and Blue for my eyes. Amanda blue eyes. I will probably not forget that when I come back to my car later, especially if I repeat it to myself throughout my time away from my car.
Now that I know memory is a process I can have more control over what and how much I remember. I plan on applying today’s lesson to my life every single day. I especially want to start to remember people's names better. And now I know the process in order to achieve this. I also liked talking to the person sitting next to me about the lesson. It is interesting and reliving to know that I am not the only one who forgets things. It was also a great way to reinforce the lesson by way of discussion. .
